This is only about part I, you?ll have to read Part II
Angels in America is a two-part play, divided in eight acts (three in part one, Millennium Approaches, and five in part two, Perestroika) that tell the story of two couples and the people around their lives. The first couple is two homosexual guys and one of them has AIDS, so the couple is trying to discover and understand their new dynamic (or lack of it). The second couple is an addicted woman and a ?inside-the-closet homosexual? man and how they live with him not being attracted to her.
What a dynamic and exciting playwright! It?s easy to imagine that, because of the big lines and the rich vocabulary - at least for me, who isn?t a native English speaker - the show can get boring and lose our attention, but it is the opposite of that! The play has such a fun and unique construction of dialogs and characters that, even if the play had four hours, I?d be invested and interested throughout the entire story. It looks like a normal contemporary play, but there is something about the order of the lines and the specific words being said that just make it special!
I think that one of the things that makes this play so memorable is that every single character is a normal person and we feel like we know someone like this, even when they are in crazy situations. For instance: when Prior and Harper meet in each other?s mind (in his dream and in her hallucination), but they know where they are, they know that what is happening isn?t real, so that gives a full new level to the characters and actors to work on because not only we are in their mind, but we are seeing they react to their own mind. Also how do you play someone with that level of conscience and control over the environment?
I also think that the notes in the beginning saying which actor plays which characters is something so interesting. For example: the actress who plays The Angel also plays Emily, The Voice, Sister Ella Chapter and The Woman In The South Bronx. And that might be only for money reasons and trying to not spend as much as it would if the show had an actor per character, but I do prefer to believe it is because it kind of makes sense for the story. So, for example, when Prior talks to Emily, he is actually seeing The Angel.
Over all, I think that the construction of every character must be so complex, even those that have only 4 lines, because they have to answer ?why does he sees me like this person?? - remember: this is coming from someone who never watched the show, I?ve only read it, so I might be totally wrong. But this really is an amazing play with a creative and different writing about a super important subject!
