1 : ?Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.?
7 : ?Mr Dursley sat frozen in his armchair. Shooting stars all over Britain? Owls flying by daylight? Mysterious people in cloaks all over the place? And a whisper, a whisper about the Potters ??
9 : ?Nothing like this man had ever been seen in Privet Drive. He was tall, thin and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak which swept the ground and high-heeled, buckled boots. His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man?s name was Albus Dumbledore.?
16 : ?Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall bent forward over the bundle of blankets. Inside, just visible, was a baby boy, fast asleep. Under a tuft of jet-black hair over his forehead they could see a curiously shaped cut, like a bolt of lightning.?
18 : ?To Harry Potter ? the boy who lived!?
22 : ?Dudley looked a lot like Uncle Vernon. He had a large, pink face, not much neck, small, watery blue eyes and thick, blond hair that lay smoothly on his thick, fat head. Aunt Petunia often said that Dudley looked like a baby angel ? Harry often said that Dudley looked like a pig in a wig.?
30 : As the snake slid swiftly past him, Harry could have sworn a low, hissing voice said, ?Brazil, here I come ? Thanksss, amigo.?
43 : ??No post on Sundays,? he reminded them happily as he spread marmalade on his newspapers, ?no damn letters today ??
Something came whizzing down the kitchen chimney as he spoke and caught him sharply on the back of the head. Next moment, thirty or forty letters came pelting out of the fireplace like bullets.?
49 : ?One minute to go and he?d be eleven. Thirty seconds ? twenty ? ten ? nine ? maybe he?d wake Dudley up, just to annoy him ? three ? two ? one ?
BOOM.
The whole shack shivered and Harry sat bolt upright, staring at the door. Someone was outside, knocking to come in.?
53 : ??Do you mean ter tell me,? he growled at the Dursleys, ?that this boy ? this boy! ? knows nothin? abou?? about ANYTHING??
Harry thought this was going a bit far. He had been to school, after all, and his marks weren?t bad. ?I know ???? things,? he said. ?I can, you know, do maths and stuff.?
But Hagrid simply waved his hand and said, ?About ??? world, I mean. ???? world. ?? world. ??? ???????? ?????.?
?What world??
Hagrid looked as if he was about to explode. ?DURSLEY!? he boomed.?
58 : ?How could a car crash kill Lily an? James Potter? It?s an outrage! A scandal! Harry Potter not knowin? his own story when every kid in our world knows his name!?
70 : ?But what does a Ministry of Magic ????
?Well, their main job is to keep it from the Muggles that there?s still witches an? wizards up an? down the country.?
?Why??
?Why? Blimey, Harry, everyone?d be wantin? magic solutions to their problems. Nah, we?re best left alone.?
71 : ?Set Books
All students should have a copy of each of the following:
The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1) by Miranda Goshawk
A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling
A Beginner?s Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore
Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander
The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble?
76 : ?Welcome,? said Hagrid, ?to Diagon Alley.?
83 : ?Well, no one really knows until they get there, do they, but I know I?ll be in Slytherin, all our family have been ? imagine being in Hufflepuff, I think I?d leave, wouldn?t you??
91 : ?He put Harry?s wand back into its box and wrapped it in brown paper, still muttering, ?Curious ? curious ??
?Sorry,? said Harry, ?but what?s curious??
Mr Ollivander fixed Harry with his pale stare.
?I remember every wand I?ve ever sold, Mr Potter. Every single wand. It so happens that the phoenix whose tail feather is in your wand, gave another feather ? just one other. It is very curious indeed that you should be destined for this wand when its brother ? why, its brother gave you that scar.??
98 : ?Fred, you next,? the plump woman said.
?I?m not Fred, I?m George,? said the boy. ?Honestly, woman, call yourself our mother? Can?t you tell I?m George??
?Sorry, George, dear.?
?Only joking, I am Fred,? said the boy, and off he went.
106 : ?Everyone expects me to do as well as the others, but if I do, it?s no big deal, because they did it first.?
108 : ?Go on, have a pasty,? said Harry, who had never had anything to share before or, indeed, anyone to share it with.
112 : ?Nobody in my family?s magic at all, it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean, it?s the very best school of witchcraft there is, I?ve heard ? I?ve learnt all our set books off by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough ? I?m Hermione Granger, by the way, who are you??
115 : ?And my name?s Malfoy, Draco Malfoy.?
165 : ?And what if I wave my wand and nothing happens??
?Throw it away and punch him on the nose,? Ron suggested.
172 : ?They weren?t in a room, as he had supposed. They were in a corridor. The forbidden corridor on the third floor. And now they knew why it was forbidden.
They were looking straight into the eyes of a monstrous dog, a dog which filled the whole space between ceiling and floor. It had three heads. Three pairs of rolling, mad eyes; three noses, twitching and quivering in their direction; three drooling mouths, saliva hanging in slippery ropes from yellowish fangs.?
184 : ??????????? ???????!? he shouted, waving his long arms like a windmill.
?You?re saying it wrong,? Harry heard Hermione snap. ?It?s Wing-???-dium ????-?-sa, make the ?gar? nice and long.?
192 : ?But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can?t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.?
224 : ?She was a very pretty woman. She had dark red hair and her eyes ? her eyes are just like mine, Harry thought, edging a little closer to the glass. Bright green ? exactly the same shape, but then he noticed that she was crying; smiling, but crying at the same time. The tall, thin, black-haired man standing next to her put his arm around her. He wore glasses, and his hair was very untidy. It stuck up at the back, just like Harry?s did.
Harry was so close to the mirror now that his nose was nearly touching that of his reflection.
?Mum?? he whispered. ?Dad???
230 : ?The Mirror will be moved to a new home tomorrow, Harry, and I ask you not to go looking for it again. If you ever ?? run across it, you will now be prepared. It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that.?
233 : ?Harry told the other two about Snape?s sudden, sinister desire to be a Quidditch referee.
?Don?t play,? said Hermione at once.
?Say you?re ill,? said Ron.
?Pretend to break your leg,? Hermione suggested.
?Really break your leg,? said Ron.?
236 : ?Nicolas Flamel,? she whispered dramatically, ?is the ???? ????? ????? ?? ??? ????????????? ?????!?
277 : ?Only one who has nothing to lose, and everything to gain, would commit such a crime. The blood of a unicorn will keep you alive, even if you are an inch from death, but at a terrible price. You have slain something pure and defenceless to save yourself and you will have but a half life, a cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips.?
306 : ??????? ???? ?????? ???, ????? ?????? ???? ??????,
??? ?? ?? ???? ???? ???, ????????? ??? ????? ????,
??? ????? ?? ????? ???? ??? ??? ???? ?????,
??????? ???? ????????? ??? ??????? ???? ???????,
??? ????? ??? ?????? ???? ???? ?????? ????,
????? ?? ?? ??? ???????, ??????? ?????? ?? ????.?
308 : ?There was already someone there ? but it wasn?t Snape. It wasn?t even Voldemort.
It was Quirrel.?
314 : ?He saw his reflection, pale and scared-looking at first. But a moment later, the reflection smiled at him. It put its hand into its pocket and pulled out a blood-red stone. It winked and put the Stone back in its pocket ? and as it did so, Harry felt something heavy drop into his real pocket. Somehow ? incredibly ? ???? ??? ??? ?????.?
315 : ?Where there should have been a back to Quirrell?s head, there was a face, the most terrible face Harry had ever seen. It was chalk white with glaring red eyes and slits for nostrils, like a snake.?
320 : ?After all, to the well-organised mind, death is but the next great adventure. You know, the Stone was really not such a wonderful thing. As much money and life as you could want! The two things most human beings would choose above all ? the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things which are worst for them.?
327 : ?It seemed to be a handsome, leather-covered book. Harry opened it curiously. It was full of wizard photographs. Smiling and waving at him from every page were his mother and father.
?Sent owls off ter all yer parents? old school friends, askin? fer photos ? Knew yeh didn? have any ? D?yeh like it??
Harry couldn?t speak, but Hagrid understood.?
