Oliver Twist

One of Dickens' most popular and moving novels, Oliver Twist deals with a world in which Dickens himself was all too familiar - a world of debtors' prisons, almshouses, and poverty.
Oliver was born in a workhouse. Apprenticed to an undertaker, he ran away to London, where the "Artful Dodger", Jack Dawkins, took the starving boy to a den of thieves. Among this motley crew, Oliver was to meet the sinister Bill Sikes and his pitiful and tragic Nancy. Hovering over the miserable and desperate segment of humanity was the evil genius and spirit of the master criminal, Fagin.
The story portrays the horrors of London underworld of that period; it is, however, marked by Dickens' particular trade-mark: Good does triumph over evil, and Oliver - an optimist to the end - lives to inherit his birthright.
