Neddy Merrill decides to swim home from a friend's pool party, traveling from fashionable swimming pool to swimming pool on a perfect mid-summer's day. But as night falls and the season begins to change, Neddy sinks from optimistic bliss to utter despair.
'The Swimmer' is a short story written by American author John Cheever, originally published in The New Yorker on July 18, 1964, and then in the short story collection 'The Brigadier and the Golf Widow' (1964), as well as within 'The Stories of John Cheever' (1978). In 1968, 'The Swimmer' was adapted into a film of the same name, starring Burt Lancaster.
